Crews from the area responded to a beach known as Burbank Beach on the Missouri River near Elk Point South Dakota about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon July, 12th for a missing swimmer.
Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges said that a 27-year-old male, not from the area was swimming with 4 or 5 others who were on the river. The missing person went about half way across and stepped off the sandbar and then went under. Crews from South Dakota Game Fish and Parts and Nebraska Game and Parks as well as North Sioux City Police brought their boat. He's expecting sonar to arrive yet today to assist in the search. As we were leaving Yankton Search and Rescue were arriving on the scene.
The sheriff says that a boy scout troop was canoeing down the river and stopped at the beach and plan to spend the night. He reminds everyone that the river can't be taken for granted, it can be fun but you have to respect the river and be safe. This is the 3rd incident in 3 years at this location.
