A second suspect accused of shooting at a deputy after an early morning pursuit Sunday Morning has been identified as Melvin William Spencer, 27.
Spencer had his initial court appearance Monday Afternoon in which bond was set at $250,000 for Attempted Murder. Court Documents say that Spencer was operating a vehicle involved in a pursuit when he lost control of the vehicle and it slid into a ditch on Allison Avenue near the Sioux City Police Training Center.
Before the Deputy was able to exit the patrol vehicle Melvin Spencer leaned out the window and began firing at the Deputy seated in the Patrol Car. At least 5 rounds struck the Patrol Car. An unnamed passenger was struck by a bullet during the exchange of gunfire with the Deputy and was transported to the hospital while Melvin Spencer was able to escape on foot and was located a couple hours later and booked into the Woodbury County Jail. More about the pursuit here.
Another passenger Brittney Hood, the initial driver of the vehicle fled from the vehicle a few minutes before the shootout, that's when Spencer took off in the vehicle before ending up in a ditch. More about Brittney Hood's arrest here.
Department of Corrections records show that Melvin Spencer was released from prison on February 12, 2016.
