A 3-year-vetran of the Sioux City Police Department Officer Dylan Grimsley initiated a traffic stop on Wednesday evening at 10:22PM in the area of West 1st and Hamilton. The vehicle did not immediately stop, until South Myrtle and Tri View Avenue.
According to Chief Doug Young and releases from the Sioux City Police Department, the traffic stop was initiated because they believed a wanted subject Daniel Riedmann, 36 of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota was in the vehicle. An alert for Riedmann stated he was known to be armed and dangerous with violent tendencies. Police say that in the course of the traffic stop they confirmed Daniel Riedmann was in the vehicle and had a nationwide felony warrant for a parole violation for habitual offender. Riedemann repeatedly failed to comply with officers commands, reaching around inside the vehicle and locking the doors.
Nine-Minutes after the radio call for the traffic stop an officer announced shots fired after Officer Dylan Grimsley fired his service weapon striking the suspect. Officers immediately removed Riedmann from the vehicle and initiated first aid, requesting medical respond to the scene. Riedmann was transported to a Mercy Medical Center and was later pronounced dead, his body has been sent to Des Moines for autopsy.
The shooting incident is being investigated by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, additional information about the incident will be released once the investigation is complete. Officer Grimsley is currently on paid Administrative leave. Police were able to confirm that a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle and that the driver Melinda Benoit, 39 of Sioux City, Iowa was removed from the vehicle during the course of the traffic stop and placed in the back of a patrol car.
