Drowning Update On July 1, 2025 just after 6:00 p.m., the South Sioux City Police Dept. was notified that a body was recovered in the areas of Onawa, IA and Decatur, NE on the Missouri River. The Monona County Sheriff’s Office was contact at 5:25 p.m. that a boater on the river had made the discovery and contacted the local authorities. The Decatur, NE Fire Dept. rescue boat was summoned to the scene and retrieved the body. In a joint investigation with the South Sioux City Police Dept. and Monona County Sheriff’s Dept., authorities believe that this is the body of the missing swimmer who is believed to have drowned on Sunday afternoon in the South Sioux City area. The next of kin of the victim has been notified. The victim’s body has been transported to the Iowa Medical Examiners for formal identification. The name of the victim will not be released at this time. The South Sioux City Police Dept. extends our thoughts and prayers to the victim and her family and friends as they grief this tragic loss. No further information will be released at this time.
